December 13, 2013
Marshall Independent

TYLER - Brett Peterson nearly posted a triple-double as he led Russell-Tyler-Ruthton to an 85-79 Camden Conference victory in triple overtime against Canby Thursday in Tyler.

Peterson contributed 46 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in the Knight's hard-fought win. Brett Vercruysse recorded 19 points and 13 boards, while Brett Knutson added nine points and eight rebounds.

Jesse Jasper drained only one basket in the contest for RTR, but it was a three-pointer to tie the score at 61-all and send the game into the first overtime. Isaiah DeRuyter scored six points, while Frankie Gecevic chipped in two points and three steals.

While the Lancers picked up their first loss of the season, there were some highlights as well. Michael Slaba met a milestone, surpassing 1,000 career points in the matchup.

"I was 19 points away and it was never really on my mind," Slaba said. "I just had my head set on going into a battle with a real tough RTR team. But I feel truly blessed by God to be given talents and opportunities. This is something I've always wanted to do and I've had amazing help along the way."

Slaba, who poured in 22 points and had eight assists and six rebounds in the contest, credits his family, coach and teammates for their support.

"My family has been really supportive and I thank my coach for allowing me to play early in my career," Slaba said. "I'd like to thank my father the most. He has pushed me ever since I was a young kid."

Zach Nuy led the Lancer scoring with 28 points. Josh Gallegos added 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Kristian Leppke had 12 points, nine boards and three steals.

"Even though we lost, it was a good game and we fought hard," Slaba said.

Canby will host Hancock on Saturday. RTR will be back in action Thursday, taking on Wabasso at the Adrian Christmas Tournament.
