REDWOOD FALLS - The Marshall boys basketball team handed Redwood Valley its first loss of the season with a 72-62 win over the Cardinals in Southwest Conference action.

"Redwood has a very good basketball team," said Marshall head coach Travis Carroll. "We knew we had to be focused and ready to play right away. We know we're going to get a good challenge every time we play them."

The Tigers built a 37-29 lead in the first half and went up by as many as 24 in the second half before Redwood Valley went on a 15-0 run to cut the lead back to single digits with just over three minutes to play.

Marshall's Bryce Johnson broke the run with a free throw and the Tigers were able to keep the Cardinals at bay down the stretch.

"Bryce made that free throw and we kind of got going after that," said Carroll. "We know that there is going to be adversity during the game. We just need to remain calm in those situations."

C.D. Douglas led Marshall with a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double to go with a pair of steals, three assists and three blocked shots.

Riley Sharbono scored 19 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. He also had three assists while Drew Hmielewski scored 12 in the win.

"It was important to play well against a good team and come out on the right end," Carroll said. "Those games prepare us for what we have moving forward. We have some tough conference and section games coming up."

The Tigers will be in action again on Saturday when they play host to Worthington.
