GIRLS BASKETBALL: Tigers down Hutchinson in opener

December 7, 2013
Marshall Independent

HUTCHINSON -- The Marshall girls basketball team opened the season in winning fashion on Friday night, going on the road to beat Hutchinson 63-48.

"The girls were really excited about playing a game," said assistant coach Steph Bot. We've been practicing hard for three weeks, so they were excited to get on the court."

Hannah Bennett led the Tiger attack with 19 points while dishing out five assists. Kenzie Beekman and Lexi Saugstad each scored 11 points. Beekman also pulled down 11 rebounds and grabbed 5 steals.

Marshall was able to take advantage of their defensive pressure to create their transition game, but it was how they handled the Hutchinson pressure that pleased the coaches.

"Hutchinson has a nice 1-2-2 half court pressure," Bot said. "I thought our girls were really composed and did a nice job of attacking the half court trap and pressure that they applied to us."

The Tigers turn right around with another non-conference game tonight when they play host to Dassel-Cokato to open the home season.

"This was a big confidence win for us, but the girls will have to come out ready to play," said Bot. "Dassel-Cokato is a good team, so it will be good to get a home game in."
