BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lancers hold off Trojans, now 3-0

Ortonville rally falls short versus unbeaten Canby

CANBY - Four players scored in double figures as Canby remained undefeated after a 62-57 non-conference win against Ortonville on Monday.

Kristian Leppke generated 17 points, helped by four 3-point field goals, with four steals as the Lancers improved to 3-0 overall. Josh Gallegos added 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while McKinley Johansen and Michael Slaba each scored 11 points.

Canby had a 38-24 lead at halftime, but Ortonville outscored the Lancers 33-24 in the second half to trim the final margin to five points.

James Nitz produced 30 points on 10 field goals and a 10 of 14 effort at the free-throw line to lead Ortonville.

Canby plays a Camden Conference game at Lakeview at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

WINTHROP - Wabasso held Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop to 14 second-half points during a 68-38 Tomahawk Conference victory in the season-openers for both teams Monday.

The Rabbits were ahead 35-24 at halftime before outscoring the Thunderbirds 33-14 during the next 17 minutes.

Kacie Rothmeier paced Wabasso (1-0 overall, 1-0 Tomahawk) with 17 points and a blocked shot. Morgan Frank added 15 points and eight rebounds, Chelsey Guetter had 11 points, seven assists and five steals and Karlee Eichten pulled down 10 rebounds and scored seven points.

Halley Busse led Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop with 20 points.

Wabasso hosts Westbrook-Walnut Grove in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. today.
