BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Canby, TMB earn victories

Canby 64, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 43

CANBY - The Canby boys basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 64-43 win over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday night.

The Lancers were led by Michael Slaba and Josh Gallegos who each had 16 points. Kristian Leppke and Zach Nuy added 13 and 11 respectively. Gallegos added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Canby will be in action again next Monday when they host Ortonville.

SLAYTON - The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team opened the season with a 58-57 win over Murray County Central in Slayton on Tuesday night.

The Panthers (1-0) were led by Josh Kirk and Riley Kirk, who had 19 and 13 points respectively, while Brett Swenhaugen added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double on the night.

The Rebels (1-1) Jaden Boerboom led the way with 16 points. Grant Rohrer came away with a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double in the loss.

TMB will play host to Redwood Valley on Saturday in Tracy while MCC will play host to Red Rock Central in Slayton next Tuesday.

Southwestern United 84, Westbrook-Walnut Grove 79

OKABENA - Southwestern United held off Westbrook-Walnut Grove 84-79 during a Red Rock Conference game that featured 55 fouls and 70 free-throw attempts.

The Chargers received a game-high 28 points from Alex Knutson, while Shane Buchman had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Brody Williams scored 14 points and Tristan Joel produced 11 more. Knutson, Williams and Joel all finished the game on the bench after fouling out.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove led 47-42 at halftime before Southwestern United won the second half by a 42-32 count.

Brandon Thurk and Trey Cranston topped the Wildcats with 21 points apiece. Thurk fouled out for SWU. Zach Schumacher provided 16 more and Aaron Fest added 15.

The Chargers shot 64 percent (18 of 28) from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats shot 67 percent (28 of 42).

Southwestern United outscored Westbrook-Walnut Grove 21-9 from 3-point range with Cranston, Thurk and Walker Crocker each draining a pair of 3-pointers.

WWG returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Red Rock Conference action at Mountain Lake Area.

GRANITE FALLS - Minnewaska Area held Yellow Medicine East to 30 percent shooting from the field during a 66-40 West Central Conference victory Tuesday.

The Sting managed a 16 of 52 (30 percent) effort and saw the Lakers shoot 26 of 56 (46 percent).

Austin Ostrander led all scorers with 21 points and made four steals to lead Minnewaska Area (1-1 overall, 1-1 WCC). Derek Burd added 10 points, while Jayden Beecher scored eight points and collected six rebounds.

Grant Lalim led Yellow Medicine East (0-1 overall, 0-1 WCC) with 14 points. Tyson Velde pulled down 15 rebounds and scored five points.
