MARSHALL - The Marshall boys hockey team came out a year after reaching the state hockey tournament and started strong with a 7-1 win over Worthington/Fulda at the Lockwood Motors Ice Arena in Marshall to open the Southwest Conference season.
"Our guys were really excited to play," said Marshall head coach Michael Weiss, who is in his first season. "You can tell there was some energy before the game."
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, getting goals from Alex Buysse and Walker Werpy. The Trojans answered with a goal at 1:54 from Nick Newman, but Andrew Bell answered right away and Buysse got his second goal of the night to put Marshall up 4-1 after the first period.

Marshall's Alex Buysse watches the puck go into the net as he scores a first-period against Worthington/Fulda in a Southwest Conference game Tuesday at Lockwood Motors Ice Arena.
"We were moving our feet well and we were moving the puck well," Weiss said. "(Goalie Mason Campion) played well tonight. He took charge of the ice. He was doing more than the goalies normal job."
In the second period, the Tigers added a pair of goals. Taylor Rasmussen scored at 5:46 and Bell got his second on the night at 6:27, giving Marshall the 6-1 lead.
"I thought we were really good defensively. We didn't give up a lot of shots," said Weiss. "But there are definitely things we can improve on."
Marshall scored a final goal in the third period when Nick Fosvick found the net, giving the Tigers the 7-1 win.
"We got a lot of confidence putting the puck in the net," Weiss said. "We got some nice goals and some we had to work pretty hard for."
Marshall will be in action again on Tuesday when the Tigers host Luverne in Southwest Conference action.
