MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says a man has been indicted in the killings of a young man and young woman who were found dead in their northeast Minneapolis apartment nearly 16 years ago.

Thirty-five-year-old Jason Preston is charged with first- and second-degree murder in the deaths of Dustin Baity and Carrie Richter. The couple was found dead on Christmas Eve, 1998.

Authorities said Preston knew the couple and killed them during a robbery or burglary.

The Star Tribune reports ( ) that detectives solved the case after submitting several DNA samples.

The couple had planned a Christmas Eve party for friends and co-workers the night they were killed. The two worked at a glassware company in Minneapolis.

Preston currently is serving prison time in California for a home invasion.
