WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Mustangs hammer Crown in opener

Nagel tops SMSU with 28 points in 101-43 rout

MARSHALL - After an abysmal end to its 4-25 season in 2012-13, the SMSU women's basketball team is certainly hoping their impressive season opener is a sign of things to come.

The Mustangs rode a 53-point first half, including 31 points from seniors Alison Nagel (22) and Bree Holleman (nine), and never looked back, defeating Crown College in convincing fashion 101-43 at the R/A Facility Monday night. The first-half scoring output was the school's highest total since 2009.

"Coming out tonight and really getting off on a good start is something that will hopefully build some momentum," said head coach Allison Kruger, entering her fourth season. "It's good to see the kids rewarded for all the effort and all the work they've put in."

Southwest Minnesota State’s Hannah Beeler (25) leads a fastbreak as Crown’s Laura Brewster (35) attempts to defend during a non-conference basketball game Monday at the R/A Facility.

Despite playing just 16 minutes, Nagel was a catalyst for SMSU, finishing with 28 points on 9 of 13 shooting, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

"Getting confidence in your team leaders on and off the court are very important things," said Kruger. "For (Nagel and Holleman) to get on track, it's a great thing. They just stepped up and knocked shots down ... they were relentless."

The opening half proved to be a major game of runs for the Mustangs, who began on an 11-2 run, and ended on a 21-5 run, holding Crown to just 21 percent shooting from the field, forcing 12 turnovers in the process.

"We were taking good shots, recognizing when we were open and just playing really well as a team," said Holleman, who chipped in with a 12 points and six assists.

Although it was an overall team effort, on this night, Holleman said the goal was clearly to get the ball inside to No. 45.

"She was dominating. When your teammates on fire like that you just have to get her the ball," Holleman said of Nagel.

While the seniors certainly were on full display, Monday night also gave the Mustangs an opportunity to look at some of their younger players. One in particular was sophomore Annessa Rosch, who scored 17 points, created five assists and added four steals off the bench.

"Building (the underclassmen) confidence is going to be key," said Nagel. "Last year we had the injury bug. This year, knock on wood, you don't know what's going to happen. We need the younger players to step up, and this was a good opportunity for them to get into a game and get into a flow."

Moving forward, the collective hope is that their first victory is just the first step.

"We had a tough season last season, but everybody came back, everybody stuck together and everybody has the same goal and same purpose," said Kruger.

That goal shifts west this upcoming week, as SMSU will travel to California this weekend to take on Notre Dame de Namur and Cal State-Monterey Bay in Belmont, Calif., more than 1,800 miles away.

And although the sunny weather will prove a welcomed-distraction from the frigid temperatures back home, Nagel knows the focus has to remain the same.

"Coach has told us all week, this is a business trip first. We want to go there, play as hard as we can and just improve."
