PREP VOLLEYBALL: Another year, another SWC title for Marshall

October 16, 2013
Marshall Independent

REDWOOD FALLS - The Marshall volleyball team added another chapter to its storied history on Tuesday night.

The Tigers claimed their third straight Southwest Conference championship and 28th overall with a three-game sweep of Redwood Valley, 25-15, 25-8, 25-8.

Marshall hasn't lost a conference match in three straight years and finished the regular season without a set loss outside of tournament play.

Westby said that though Marshall served and defended well, the timing was off offensively.

"We were just sluggish," Westby said. "Our timing between setter and hitter wasn't good all night. That was a bit of a frustration."

Kenzie Beekman led the Tigers with 16 kills and nine digs. Sydney Griffin added six kills to go with 13 digs, 14 set assists and two ace blocks. She was also 10-for-12 serving with three aces.

Hanna Bennett was 15-of-15 with an ace serving while recording 25 digs.

Rachel Sanow added an 8-for-8 serving performance to go with her 13 assists.

"We served well and we kept a lot of balls alive," said Westby. "It got to the point where they made a number of errors.

"As the match progressed we blocked better," Westby said. "

The Tigers will have seven days before the start of the Section 3AA tournament. Seeding and match-ups will be announced today.

"There were some positives," said Westby. "We're looking forward to the fact that we have just about a week and a half of practice time.

"We can get back to some things we worked on back in August that we haven't had a chance to work on."
