October 9, 2013
Marshall Independent

BURNSVILLE - Southwest Minnesota State University wide receiver Anthony Dean has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his record-breaking performance Saturday night during a home loss to the University of Sioux Falls.

Dean, a 6-foot-2, 203-pound senior from Tampa, Fla., caught a career-high 11 passes, set an NSIC single-game record with 308 yards receiving and scored a school-record tying four receiving touchdowns in SMSU's 55-48 last-minute homecoming loss to Sioux Falls.

Dean broke the previous record of 289 yards set by Billy Beckwith of Minnesota-Morris versus Winona State in 1999. Dean scored on touchdown passes of 42, 82, 6 and 72 yards in the game - with the last touchdown tying the game at 45-45 late in the third quarter.

Dean is the second SMSU player to record more than 300 yards receiving in one game. Alvin Ashley holds the record with 320 yards in a non-conference game versus Minot State in 1991. Dean is the ninth player in program history with four touchdown receptions in a single-game and the first since Ray Denson on Sept. 27, 2003.

Dean's receiving total from Saturday ranks as the highest single-game total in NCAA Division II this season and ranks second in all of NCAA football for any of the four levels, including FBS, FCS, Division II or Division III. Jeremy Duncan from NCAA Division III Wilmington College, Ohio, had 327 receiving yards Saturday night in a losing effort.

Dean leads SMSU this season in receptions (26), yards (540) and touchdowns (eight). He has played in 35 career games with 81 receptions for 1,424 yards and 19 touchdowns and ranks second in school history in average yards per catch (17.5) and ninth in receiving touchdowns.

Dean is currently ranked fourth in country in receiving touchdowns, 18th in receiving yards, 21st in receiving yards per game and 26th in scoring.

Dean is the second SMSU player to earn the weekly award this season. Running back Tyler Tonderum earned the award on Sept. 16.

Southwest Minnesota State (2-3 NSIC, 0-1 NSIC South) continues play this Saturday night Wayne State, Neb., with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
