PREP VOLLEYBALL: Tigers win twice at Lakeville North

October 5, 2013
Marshall Independent

LAKEVILLE - The Marshall volleyball team took the momentum from a 27-25 come-from-behind win in their first game of the Lakeville North Invitational to cruise to a pair of pool play wins Friday night.

"We were able to block some balls and dig a few balls and eventually that turned the momentum our way," said Marshall head coach Dan Westby. "That was a big reason we made a big push at the end of the first set and carried it all the way through the second set."

The Tigers defeated Hill Murray 27-25, 25-9 and Heritage Christian Academy 25-, 25-9.

In the first match, Marshall found themselves on the brink of losing Game 1, down 25-24, but rallied to win 27-25 before rolling through the second game, 25-9.

"They did some things offensively early that gave us trouble," Westby said. "We made some adjustments defensively. Our kids did a nice job. I think that's a big reason why we were able to establish such a big lead in the second set."

Hannah Bennett was 11-for-11 with an ace serving to go with 10 digs. Kenzie Beekman had 10 kills, 15 digs and was 7-for-7 with an ace serving in the win.

In Match 2 serving was the difference for the Tigers who won 25-8, 25-9. Bennett was 12-for-12 with two aces serving. Beekman had eight kills and eight digs and Sydney Griffin came away with six kills, 11 set assists and as 13-of-14 with two aces serving.

"We really served well against Heritage Christian," said Westby. "They had a difficult time passing. Our kids were really tough from the service line."

Marshall (18-3) will finish pool play this morning, facing off against Lakeville South at 10:15 a.m.

"The mentality is you want to win your pool so you are in the championship bracket," Westby said. "It's really important that our kids come out and play well.

"Lakeville South is a good team. We had a chance to see them play in our tournament. They are a difficult match-up for us. We'll have to come out and play well again."
