PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Marshall girls win Buffalo Invitational

September 27, 2013
Marshall Independent

The Marshall girls cross country team earned top honors at a 15-team meet Thursday in Buffalo.

The Tigers won the meet with 50 points, followed by Minnetonka (65), Monticello (82), Orono (185) and Big Lake (187) to round out the top five teams.

Minnetonka's Lucy Hoelscher finished the course in 15 minutes, nine seconds to win the girls varsity race.

Claire Boersma led Marshall with a fifth-place finish, completing the race in 15:37. Jackie Turner turned in a 15:57 performance to take eighth-place, while Nichole Sample was ninth (15:59) and Morgan Radel 11th (16:04).

"It was a challenging course," Tiger head coach Marie Sample said. "We go there because the section meet is run on the same course. It's a fairly hilly course and it has a long, 400-meter hill. It's a gradual uphill and (Thursday), it was compounded by the winds that were coming strong out of the south, blowing right down. And they had to go up that thing twice."

Rounding out the team scoring for Marshall was seventh-grader Sydney Mauch, who ran a 16:17 to earn 17th-place.

"It was good to have four runners in the top 11 and then our fifth runner was a seventh-grader," Sample said. "This was her first big varsity race, so we'll drop some more time on her next few weeks. We're pretty excited about her."

Sample said that Mauch has been gaining valuable racing experience at the junior high and junior varsity level.

"We just wanted her to get her feet wet a little bit and then maybe factor in and she did," Sample said. "It's great. We're about 12 deep and they're fighting for seven spots. She's just another wrench that we get to throw in there."

Sydney Blomme took 37th-place (17:13), while Courtney Mauch was 44th (17:27).

"They're a very talented group of girls, but they're very humble and they work really hard," Sample said. "They're learning so much, even like how to compete. But they still don't know what they're capable of. I want them to realize it pretty soon."

Marshall placed fifth in the boys team standings with 104 points, behind Buffalo (86), Andover (86), Hutchinson (95) and Delano (99).

Hutchinson's Isaiah Barlow was the boys race medalist in 16:03.

Two Tigers - Andrew Bell (sixth in 17:11) and Blain Moran (eighth in 17:29) - finished among the top 10 individuals.

The rest of Marshall's top five runners included Michael Larson (20th in 18:01), Wade DeAustin (27th in 18:28) and John Botsford (45th in 19:07).

"There was definitely some room for improvement," MHS head coach Brian Leibfried said. "We were shooting to keep up with Buffalo after they got us by 16 points in Hutchinson and by 18 points Thursday. Even though we didn't have our best race, giving up only two points is not a big difference."

Liebfried said he would like to see some MHS runners move toward the front of the pack.

"We needed to get our 3-4-5 runners to move up," Leibfried said. "Looking at the other teams ahead of us, that was the area where they're getting the best of us. If we can sinch-up that 3-4-5, we can make up quite a few points."

Marshall's Chase VanKeulen placed 46th in 19:09, while Mason Reece ended up 77th in 20:29.

The Tigers run at Montevideo on Tuesday.
