September 26, 2013
Marshall Independent

Hello Mustang fans!

The Southwest Minnesota State fall sports teams gave our Mustang fans a lot to be proud of last weekend.

Football, women's golf, women's soccer and volleyball all put forth a great effort and had great success.

SMSU went 5-0 last week with our women's golf team finishing third among the 14-team Mustang Invitational, hosted by SMSU at the Marshall Golf Club.

Women's Soccer enter Top 25 poll

For the first time in the program's history, the Mustangs' women's soccer team is tied for the No. 18 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Division II Top 25 Poll. The poll was released Tuesday.

Congratulations to head coach, T.J. Buchholz, his staff and our student-athletes for all of the hard work and dedication it has taken to elevate SMSU to a national ranking.

Next week, homecoming will be celebrated at SMSU, featuring the theme, "Paint the Town Brown & Gold." There are a great number of activities planned for next week. You can see the full schedule of events at SMSU.edu.

This Week

The No. 18 Mustangs (6-0-0 overall, 3-0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) will conclude a five-game homestand by hosting St. Cloud State at 1 p.m. Saturday and Minnesota-Duluth at 1 p.m. Sunday at The Schwan's Regional Event Center.

SMSU is currently tied for first place in the NSIC standings with Augustana, Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth. The Mustangs look to make it five straight over the Huskies on Saturday. Minnesota-Duluth presents a much different challenge for SMSU, which is trying to overcome a 21 game drought against the Bulldogs since 1996.

Congratulations to Megan Kilroy and Brienna Dehkes who were named NSIC Players of the Week. Kilroy was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week, while Dehkes was the NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week.

The Mustangs (2-1 NSIC, 0-0 NSIC South) will head north Saturday to face Bemidji State University (1-2 NSIC, 0-0 NSIC North). The kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.

Trivia Contest

Congratulations to Megan Kassel Mattison for providing the correct answer to the Sept. 12 edition of Mustang Hoofprints' Trivia Question: What SMSU Goalkeeper holds the career record for saves on the Mustang Women's Soccer team?

Lora Moldenhauer recorded 521 career saves in goal for the Mustangs from 2000-03.

This week's question is what SMSU volleyball player holds the record for career service aces?

The first person to send me an email me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive an SMSU t-shirt.

NOTE: Chris Hmielewski is the athletics director at Southwest Minnesota State University. His column 'Mustang Hoofprints' appears in The Marshall Independent each week throughout the school year.
