DENVER - The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team opened the 2013 Colorado Premier Challenge with wins over Adams State and No. 17 West Florida.

The No. 14 Mustangs defeated Adams State 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-23, 25-17) and UWF 3-2 (25-20, 25-22, 30-32, 20-25, 15-7) to improve their season to 4-2.

There were 10 ties and six lead changes in the first set of the day against Adams State, but SMSU was able to rally late in the set, scoring four straight points to take the set. Errors piled up throughout the second set, leaving the door open for their opponent.

The third set, SMSU held a 21-15 advantage before ASU came storming back to make it a two-point spread at 22-20. Back-to-back kills from Claire Sames and Whitney Burmeister gave the Mustangs a 24-20 lead, but their opponent refused to go away without a fight and came close to knotting up the set. But a kill from Abbey Thissen ended the set, 25-23 in favor of SMSU.

In the fourth set, the Mustang hit .320 and helped themselves to a 25-17 win. Burmeister recorded a match-high 15 kills, while Sames tallied 13 and McKell Anderson 12. Thissen added 10 kills and two ace blocks, while Jessica Thelemann had nine kills and four assisted blocked.

Emilee Gutzmer spread the attack, collecting 51 set assists for SMSU, while Rachel Westby chipped in with 15 digs.

In the match against West Florida, the Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but a lapse in the middle of the third set left SMSU playing catch-up. The Argonauts went on to win the set 32-30, taking momentum into the fourth set and winning that as well.

With the match on the line in the fifth set, the Mustangs worked their way to a 7-5 lead. After a UWF kill, SMSU built a 12-6 lead and cruised to a 15-7 win.

Thissen hammered 21 kills for the Mustangs in the match, while Sames had 14, Burmeister 13, Anderson nine and Thelemann six. Gutzmer tallied 55 set assists and had eight digs. Westby was solid in the back row, recording 20 digs, while Burmeister added 17 and Anderson nine.

SMSU is back in action today, competing in the Gold division beginning with a 10:30 a.m. match against No. 1 University of Tampa.
