Tigers, Lancers battle for cross country titles

MARSHALL - The Marshall boys and girls cross country teams had an exciting day after both won the team titles at the Marshall Invitational on Tuesday at Independence Park.

Marshall battled Canby/Minnesota/Lincoln HI head-to-head for the team title in the boys race. Both schools tied with 59 points and were forced to used their the scores of the sixth runners.

The Tigers' John Botsford (22nd; 18 minutes, 31.1 seconds) slipped past Braeden Full (43rd; 20:04.0) in those sixth positions.

"Going into the meet, we knew that we had to look out for Canby/Minnesota/Lincoln HI. But as the race shook out, it became a tight race," Marshall boys cross country head coach Brian Liebfried. "It came down to a tiebreaker and we edged them with our sixth runner."

Top-finishers for the Tigers were Andrew Bell (16:56.2), who took third, and Blaine Moran (17:04.7), who was fifth. Marshall was able to place six of its runners in the top 25, to insure the victory. They included Mike Larson (12th, 17:55.6), Wade DeAustin (18th, 18:03.2), Chase VanKeulen (18:25.6) and Botsford.

"I'm encouraged with our effort and this proves that every point counts," Liebfried said. "During our meet at Monticello, I thought we looked tired. That was not the case (Tuesday) because our guys were fresh and had pep in there steps. It's always great to run at home."

The Lancers held close with Wyatt Johansen (17:35.3), Travis Dinius (17:53.7) and McKinley Johansen (17:36.3), who respectively placed seventh, eighth and ninth for C/M/L. Anthony Wollom (15th, 17:59.1), Josue Leos (20th, 18:09.1) also placed in the top 25 for the Lancers.

Redwood Valley's Ryan Phillips was the individual medalist after setting a pace of 16:21.1. Yellow Medicine East's Jacob Carroll placed sixth in 17:34.9, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton's Matt Lavoy ended up 14th in 17:58.9 `and Murray County Central's Clayton Hartle came in 17th in 18:02.0.

Girls

Marshall pulled away from the pack in the girls race, placing four runners in the top ten en route to gaining plenty of experience after defeating C/M/L in a 32-65 victory.

The Tigers were led by freshman Claire Boersma with an impressive finish in 15:15.5 to place third in the individual standings. She was followed by Nichole Sample (fifth, 15:53.8), Jackie Turner (sixth, 15:57.4) and Morgan Radal (seventh, 16:08.7).

"We wanted to just get out and race today," Marshall girls cross country coach Marie Sample said. "We have a young team and we are looking for some experience."

A strong fourth-place finish by Leah Jessen (15:36.40), paced the Lancers. Also among the top ten for C/M/L were Natalie Dinius (16:31.1) and Emily Gillingham (16:27.1), placing eighth and tenth, respectively.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton's Cassandra Hook found herself in the top ten with a ninth-place effort in 16:22.9, leading the Panthers to a seventh-place finish overall. Murray County Central's Sariah Cheadle led the Rebels by ending up 24th in 17:46.4.

Redwood Valley's Kayla Huhnerkoch was the individual medalist of the girls race in 14:59.9.

The Marshall cross country teams compete Thursday at the Hutchinson Invitational.
