PREP VOLLEYBALL: WWG captures championship of home invite

WESTBROOK - The Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers went 5-0 in the six-team round robin tournament Saturday in Westbrook.

WWG defeated Fulda (25-9, 25-20), Lincoln HI (25-13, 25-12), Lakeview (25-19, 25-23), Adrian (25-18, 25-20) and New Ulm Cathedral (25-13, 25-11).

Abby Herding was solid from behind the serving line, going 58-for-58 with 12 aces for the Chargers, while Dayna Comnick was 42-for-48 with 14 aces. Comnick pounded down 45 kills throughout the day, while Madison Tackle added 14 and Cassidy Mischke 11.

Comnick also led the defensive effort, collecting 34 digs, while Herding chipped in with 24 digs and 72 set assists. Morgan Dennistoun added three ace blocks.

The Chargers return to action at home today against Red Rock Conference rival Springfield.

The Lakeview Lakers collected three match victories Saturday, including wins over Fulda (25-11, 25-9), Lincoln HI (25-18, 25-19) and Adrian (25-14, 25-18). The Lakers opened the tournament with a loss to NUC (26-24, 19-25, 15-7) and also fell to WWG (25-23, 25-19).

Lakeview was led by Brianna Hoffman, who had 32 kills and seven ace blocks. Rachel Kurtenbach added 15 kills and two blocks, while Briatta Buntjer chipped in with 46 digs. Madi Nelson earned nine ace serves while going 55-for-59 from behind the line in addition to recording 47 set assists.

The Lakers (4-4 overall) continue action on the road today at Wabasso.

Lincoln HI closed out the day with a 2-3 tournament record. The Rebels picked up their first win of the season, defeating Adrian 25-19, 19-25, 15-13 before falling to Lakeview (25-18, 25-19) and NUC (25-19, 25-21).

Lincoln HI earned its second victory of the season in a 25-21, 25-21 battle against Fulda.

Morgan Citterman had an all-around strong performance for the Rebels, contributing 16 kills, 21 digs, 26 set assists and was 24-for-30 serving with six aces. Maranda Jerzak added 14 kills and 2.5 blocks, while Brooke Taylor had 12 kills and was 49-for-51 at the serving line with 17 aces. Alyssa Otto chipped in with 39 set assists, while Heidi Pavek collected 18 digs.

The Rebels have the chance to add to their season win record as they get ready to host MACCRAY on Tuesday.
