Minneota/Lincoln HI hammers Lakeview 76-14

Buysse completes six TD passes as Vikings start year 1-0

COTTONWOOD - The Minneota/Lincoln HI football team used all aspects of the game Thursday night to open the season on a high note, completing seven touchdown passes in Little Sioux Conference play.

The Vikings (1-0, 1-0 LSC) defeated Lakeview (0-1, 0-1 LSC) 76-14 Thursday night in Cottonwood.

"We protected Austin, we gave him time and he made his reads, which set up our run," said Minneota head coach Chad Johnston.

Minneota struck early in the first quarter with Austin Buysse finding Jordan Beck in the end zone twice in the first 6 minutes of the game.

"They were jumping my primary reads, which left the other guy wide open," said Buysse.

Buysse found Nicholas Esping for a 20-yard touchdown with 1:46 left to make it a 21-0 game going into the second quarter.

Nathan Pavek scored the first rushing touchdown of the game from 12 yards out to make it 28-0.

Pavek added another touchdown on special teams, taking a punt return 60 yards to the end zone.

Buysse and Esping hooked up again in the second quarter, this time on a 10-yard pass play to make it 42-0.

The final touchdown of the half came with just under 2 minutes left. Buysse and Beck connected for their third touchdown of the night on a 15-yard pass to make it 49-0.

Lakeview started with the ball in the second half, but a big hit from Beck on Laker quarterback Taylor Pickthorn caused a fumble, which Daniel Harrison picked up and went 35 yards to the end zone.

"I got pretty lucky," said Beck. "He didn't look and I came up and hit him hard."

Lakeview's Anthony Bossuyt had been giving the Lakers great field position off kickoffs, and he answered big off the defensive touchdown, going 91 yards to put Lakeview on the board.

"I was looking for holes and I found one," said Bossuyt. "Then I just took off."

The 2-point conversion failed, but the Lakers made it a 56-6 game with the kick return.

"It was really good for him," said Lakeview head coach John Sterner. "He's been having a lot of success in track. His speed and strength have gotten really good."

The Vikings took their next possession and marched down the field with Buysse and Beck, who completed their fourth touchdown of the night, making it a 62-6 game. Lakeview's Trent Merkins cut through the line and blocked the extra point.

After a Laker three-and-out, Minneota/Lincoln HI used six plays to reach the end zone with Garrett Hennen rushing for four yards to make it a 69-6 game.

In the fourth quarter, each team found the end zone one more time. Minneota/Lincoln HI's Alex Pohlen connected with Hennen for an 80-yard pass and Lakeview's Seth Goepferich found Bossuyt for 58 yards on the final play of the game. Goepferich ran the 2-point conversion in himself to make the final score 76-14.
