After pulling off a surprising sweep of the second-seeded Jackson Bulls in the first round of the First Nite/Gopher League playoffs, the Minneota Mudhens ran out of magic in the second round against top seed Fairmont. The Martins clinched a series sweep Friday by defeating the Mudhens 4-0 in Minneota.
Fairmont held a 1-0 lead through five innings before taking command of the game with a three-run sixth. That was plenty to work with for Fairmont starter Brandon Alfson. The draftee from Pipestone allowed no runs on just three hits with 15 strikeouts and one walk.
Tony Shaikoski took the loss for Minneota, going seven innings. He allowed four runson nine hits with four strikeouts. Matt Musser tossed two scoreless innings for Minneota to close out the game.
Fairmont's Ian Bents had a big night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Tyson Sonnenburg, Jesus Macias and Justin Greenwood had the only hits for Minneota, all singles.
Minneota ends its season with a 7-22 overall record.
