Infield single gives Granite Falls 3-2 walk-off win over Minneota in playoffs

Rhys Russatz hustled down the line, legging out a bases-loaded infield single and driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of a 3-2 win for Granite Falls Legion over Minneota on Monday in Granite Falls. The extra-inning victory sends Granite Falls onto the double elimination portion of the District 7 playoffs while simultaneously ending Minneota's season.

Despite throwing eight solid innings, Joe Sannerud took a no-decision after allowing a tying run for Minneota in the top of the fifth. Austin Vikander relieved Sannerud to start the ninth and fired one shutout inning to pick up the win.

Austin Buysse started and went three innings for Minneota. Peyton Nuy took over and threw five consecutive scoreless innings before giving up the winning run in the ninth.

Alec Engler went 2-for-4 with a double and knocked in both of Minneota's run, while Cory Drietz was 2-for-2 and scored both of those runs.

Granite Falls will face Montevideo on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Montevideo.

VFW baseball

Tyler 6, Slayton 4

Taking advantage of its opponent's miscues, the Tyler VFW baseball team advanced past the first round of the District 3 playoffs with a 6-4 win over Slayton Monday in Tyler.

Trailing 3-1, Tyler scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, three of which came as the result of Slayton errors. Slayton finished with four errors in the contest, while Tyler had none.

Brandon Verly earned the win on the mound for Tyler, striking out 12 batters while allowing seven hits and walking four batters.

Tyler finished with 10 hits for the game and had four batters record a multi-hit game. Steve Snow, Levi Hurst, Ross Johnson and Dain LaRock each had two hits for Tyler. Snow had one double, while the rest of the hits were singles.

Up next for Tyler (8-7 overall) is a second-round matchup on the road against Bird Island.

Tracy 8, Granite Falls 1

Taylor Carlson and Spencer Smith combined to give up just one hit while leading the Tracy VFW baseball team to an 8-1 home win over Granite Falls Monday in the first round of the District 3 playoffs.

Carlson worked the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks. Smith pitched the final 1 2/3, earning all five outs via strikeout.

Gavin Van Moer had a big game at the plate for Tracy, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Carlson was 2-for-3 and drove in two Tracy runners.

Blake Lindstrom went the distance for Granite Falls, allowing eight hits in the loss. His team committed five errors in the game.

Tracy (7-5 overall) moves on to face Marshall Blue Thursday in Marshall.
