Members of the Marshall Fire Department hung a wreath of flowers on the firefighter statue at Memorial Park in downtown Marshall on Wednesday afternoon, in memory of Arizona firefighters known as "Hotshots," who lost their lives earlier this week.
"We thought we needed to recognize what happened in Arizona," said Marshall Fire Chief Marc Klaith.
On Sunday, 19 firefighters from an elite crew of the Prescott, Ariz., Fire Department were killed while fighting a wildfire northwest of Phoenix. Klaith said the loss was tragic, especially from the perspective of firefighters.
"That's the worst thing that could happen," he said. "And they were the elite of the elite. They knew how to fight fires."
Klaith said Memorial Park seemed like an appropriate place to recognize the Arizona firefighters. The 9/11 Memorial in the park also pays tribute to firefighters and emergency responders.
