Marshall Orange comeback comes up just short vs. Olivia

July 3, 2013
Marshall Independent

Marshall VFW Orange fell just shy of picking up a win against Olivia in the last of four games played at Legion Field on Tuesday. After the Marshall Mudcats split a doubleheader with Sioux Falls West (S.D.) and Marshall VFW Blue shutout Olivia 8-0, Orange ended the night with a 5-4 loss.

Olivia scored all five of its runs in the first two innings, including a four-run top of the first against Orange starter Mitchell Pauling. Blaise Andries took over to start the third and silenced the Olivia bats for the remainder of the game. Andries also scored one of the four runs for Marshall.

The other three runs were scored by Thomas Fischer, who had three of Orange's eight hits. Nick Erbes had the only other multi-hit game for Orange, clubbing two base knocks.

John Botsford drilled a two-run double for Orange in the bottom of the fifth, pulling Marshall within a run. Orange was unable to complete the comeback, however.

Unless a rained out game against Slayton is rescheduled, Orange completes its regular season with a 2-13 record. Marshall will open the playoffs on the road on July 15. Orange's opponent is yet to be determined.
