Despite the similar scores, Marshall VFW Blue dropped a pair of road games to Sioux Falls West on Tuesday in decidedly different fashions.
Blue fell to Sioux Falls 12-11 in the opening game, allowing just six hits but committed four errors. Marshall pitchers were also plagued by control issues as Sioux Falls scored nine runs in the third to erase a 7-0 Marshall lead.
Derek Rasmussen took the loss for Marshall, relieving starter Aaron Polejewski in the third.
On offense, Blue opened up the game with six runs in the first inning, but a sixth inning comeback fell one run short. Marshall managed just five hits in the game, but Sioux Falls also made four errors.
Scott Buss went 2-for-4 for Marshall in the game with a double and three RBIs. Brad Bahlmann also had a hit and an RBI, while Noah Winkelman and Matt Thompson added hits as well.
In Game 2, Blue again jumped out to an early lead, holding a 7-1 advantage entering the bottom of the third. Sioux Falls scratched back with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but Marshall added three more runs to enter the bottom the sixth leading 10-7.
Sioux Falls turned on their offense in the last half inning, stringing together five of their nine hits to plate four runs for the walk-off win.
Again Rasmussen was credited with the loss, throwing 1 1/3 innings of relief. He also had two RBIs in the game. Thompson started and went 2 2/3 innings, while Buss tossed 1 1/3 innings for Blue.
Winkelman had a double and RBI for Marshall, which slapped 10 total hits for the game. Jack Bock and Dylan Criquet-Danielson were each 2-for-3, while Brent Andries drove in a pair of runs himself.
After the pair of bitter losses, Marshall Blue drops to 7-7 on the season and will look to rebound Thursday with a road game at Worthington.
