Hello Mustang fans!
This Saturday marks the end of the 2012-13 academic year with the Southwest Minnesota State University commencement ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in the R/A Facility. The town of Marshall will be buzzing on Friday evening into Saturday morning as family members and friends of our graduates arrive in town for the festivities.
It has been a very successful year in the SMSU Department of Athletics, and a very productive two years under the leadership of Interim President Ron Wood. The Mustang Family is very thankful for President Wood's innovative approach, forward-moving mentality and the positive energy he brought to our campus each and every day. He has been instrumental in the development and implementation of several sustainable programs throughout the university that will and have increased the retention and recruitment of students at SMSU.
President Wood continued to build relationships with our local and regional businesses and institutions of higher education to enhance the educational opportunities in southwestern Minnesota. On behalf of the entire Mustang family, thank you, President Wood, for joining our family and making a difference at SMSU and in each of the many lives you have touched along the way.
We are a couple weeks away for the kick off of the 2013-14 Mustang Booster Club Membership Drive which will be starting on May 22 at noon at the Marshall Golf Club. The top priority for the Mustang Booster Club is to raise athletic scholarship dollars for SMSU Athletics. The membership drive is the fundraising event that generates the most revenue for the booster club each year. If you are interested in participating on one of our membership drive teams, please contact Tim Steinbach in the SMSU Department of Athletics at 537-7204.
Please mark your calendars as the Mustang Booster Club will host the David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic being held on Friday, June 14, at the Marshall Golf Club and Saturday, June 15, at the Tyler Golf Club.

This Week in Mustang Athletics
The SMSU baseball team (17-23-1 overall, 11-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) concluded its season last weekend with a four-game sweep of Minnesota-Crookston. The Mustangs had all 16 scheduled home games either canceled or moved to other locations this season. SMSU did not qualify for the NSIC tournament which began Wednesday in St. Cloud.
Last Sunday, the Mustangs held Senior Day for five of the SMSU baseball players, paying tribute to Alex Alvarez, Corby McGlauflin, Brian Ness, Dylan Shoemaker and Kyle Young.
Congratulations to senior outfielder Kyle Young and sophomore designated hitter Steven Kremer, who were named to the 2013 All-NSIC Baseball team. Young earned first team All-NSIC honors, while Kremer was named to the All-NSIC second team. Young is the first SMSU player since pitcher Adam Schrader in 2010 to earn first team All-NSIC accolades.
Congratulations are also in order for senior SMSU folfer Krista Weiszhaar, who was named to the 2013 All-NSIC second team as selected by the league's head coaches. Weiszhaar, a native of Harwood, N.D., and 2009 graduate of West Fargo High School, led SMSU this season with an 83.2 stroke average in 18 rounds, with four top-five and five top-10 finishes.
Weiszhaar finished her career ranking fourth in program history in stroke average at 82.8 in 84 rounds and played in three NCAA region tournaments (2010-12) and one NCAA national championship (2012). She recorded 10 career top-five and 18 top-10 finishes during her four seasons.
- No one was able to provide the correct answer to our last Mustang Hoofprint's Trivia Question: How many years has the Mustang Hoofprints newspaper article been printed in the Marshall Independent? Former SMSU Director of Athletics Butch Raymond started writing Mustang Hoofprints the fall of 1997 through 2004. I continued the tradition once I became AD in 2006 and have been writing the article ever since. Mustang Hoofprints has been part of the Marshall Independent for 14 years.
Thank you to Russ Labat and the entire Marshall Independent staff for their support of SMSU and Mustang Athletics!
