Marshall boys’ track team gets 3rd place in Waconia meet

The Marshall track and field team braved cold and windy conditions Thursday to compete in an invite in Waconia. The Tiger boys brought their full team to the event, while the girls had a split squad, as about 10 of their athletes will be competing at the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D., today and Saturday.

The Tiger boys finished in third place out of eight teams with 104.5 points. Cambridge-Isanti won with 128 points and Glencoe-Silver Lake was second at 122.

Coming off a strong performance Tuesday in Brookings, S.D., Marshall sophomore Sam Marshall had another good day on the track. He won the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.55 seconds, was fifth in the 100 dash (12.27) and he ran a leg for the Tigers' 4x400 relay team that took third place (3:37.84).

"This was back-to-back meets with successful runs for him," Marshall boys' head coach Mike Jacobs said. "I'm probably more proud of what he did today because of the conditions. It was really cold and windy and the entire straightaway he was running into a finishing headwind. The elements weren't quite as conducive to a good run."

Promise Nkowacha didn't run in Brookings but he didn't skip a beat Thursday. He won the 300 hurdles (33.18), was second in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, and he was also part of the 4x400 relay and the 4x200 relay that placed fourth.

Jacobs was also pleased with the performance of Andrew Bell, the lone Tiger boy who will be competing at the Howard Wood Relays this weekend. Bell was second in the 1,600 run, achieving a personal best time of 4:44.75 and also ran in the 4x800 relay and the 4x400 relay.

"You don't see it in some respects because he was locked in the relays, but he had a good meet for us," Jacobs said fo Bell. "He had an excellent 2:08 leg in the 4x800 and came back and ran a personal best in the mile. That was a really good effort. Then he came back and ran the second best quarter that we've had this year in the 4x400 relay. He's a kid who always works hard and it's nice to see him do well.

With a shorthanded team, the Tiger girls placed fifth with a team score of 66. Waconia won with 185 points and was followed by Orono (150), Watertown-Mayer (107) and Glencoe-Silver Lake (79).

"Not a lot of PR's today. I'm not sure if kids are just cold or out of sync, but we'll call it a good practice day for us," Marshall girls' head coach Marie Sample said.

The Tigers' lone win came from Rachel Miller in the 100 hurdles. She finished in 17.65 seconds.

Courtney VanKeulen added a second-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 4-8. It was her first time competing with the team this year.

"I've been trying to get her out all season long, and she's been practicing with us around her work schedule," Sample said. "She took second for us in the high jump with a 4-foot-8 jump, which was really nice."

Following the Howard Wood Relays, the Tigers' next competition is scheduled for Thursday in Worthington.
