Tigers rout Redwood in SWC baseball doubleheader

May 3, 2013
Marshall Independent

Behind 25 runs and two strong pitching performances, the Marshall Tigers baseball team rolled to a sweep of the Redwood Valley Cardinals in Redwood Falls on Thursday. The Tigers took just six innings to take the first Southwest Conference game 14-0, while Riley Roth's two-run home run paved the way to an 11-6 win in Game 2 for Marshall.

Aaron Mathiowetz got the win for Marshall in Game 1, striking out six and walking seven in five innings of duty. CD Douglas was the pitcher of record for the Tigers in Game 2, pitching 5 2/3 innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Conner Mesman pitched 2 1/3 total innings in relief, allowing no runs, no hits and walking two.

"Getting quality outings by both CD and Matho were very nice today," Marshall head coach Chace Pollock said. "With our schedule the way it is, with the weather pushing us back, we're going to need quality starts a lot to take it easy on some arms. Today was a very nice outing by both guys and then Conner Mesman came in and closed the door. That's what we're going to need; we're going to need guys to throw as many innings as possible and a couple guys to pick each other up."

Despite the windy conditions, the Tigers had no troubles at the plate, mashing 20 hits in the twin bill.

Alex Mathiowetz went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 1, while twin brother Aaron was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Colton Peterson was a combined 4-for-6 on the day with a double, as he continued to serve as a leader for the Tigers on the field.

"He threw for us in New Ulm, then he caught Game 1 for us today and (was the designated hitter) in Game 2," Pollock said of Peterson. "It's about keeping guys fresh and he's been doing a very nice job. He's one of those guys that, today, hit the ball very, very well for us. He seemed to square up everything that he hit. The wind was coming in fairly strong from left field and he was hitting the ball hard straight into the wind, and that's something he can hang his hat on today in that type of weather. He's got the power to do some things."

Freshman Drew Hmielewski had a breakout day for the Tigers, racking up four hits (including a double), swiping four bases and driving in five runs.

Marshall (3-2 overall, 2-2 SWC) will be back on the diamond for a pair of non-conference games on Saturday in Alexandria. The Tigers will take on their hosts at 11 a.m. before facing St. Michael-Albertville later in the day.
