MnDOT outlines summer road construction for region

March 28, 2013
By Deb Gau , Marshall Independent

MARSHALL - With the spring thaw comes road construction season, and resurfacing and construction projects are planned for several area highways, officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

MnDOT had a statewide kickoff event to discuss projects in the coming construction season on Wednesday morning. In an address broadcast around Minnesota, Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle said 2013 would be "a year of significant investment" in Minnesota infrastructure. More than 300 projects are planned around the state, with a total cost of about $1.1 billion, Zelle said.

On a more local level, there will be several highway projects affecting highways in the Marshall area this summer, said MnDOT project engineer Nick Klisch. While some of the projects will mean traffic detours, the projects will include improving road surfaces, repairing bridges and improving highway safety.

Several projects that will impact traffic within Marshall are planned to take place this summer. MnDOT will be resurfacing the road and repairing two bridges on Minnesota Highway 19 in Marshall, and the project will require the road to be closed between Lyon County Road 7 and 4th Street, Klisch said. The bridge projects will resurface the roadway on both bridges, as well as repairing any deterioration to their structures.

One of the two bridges, near Legion Field Road, is a historic structure dating back to the 1930s. Klisch said the bridge will be getting new railings and lighting to help restore it to its original condition.

There will be a detour in place during construction on this project, Klisch said. Traffic will be directed onto Lyon County Road 7 and Minnesota Highway 23.

A pair of Marshall city street projects requiring detours are also planned for this summer, said Marshall Public Works Director Glenn Olson. Those projects include street reconstruction on a portion of West Main Street, and at the intersections of East College Drive and Redwood Street, and East College Drive and West Marshall Street.

Olson said the city will coordinate with MnDOT to establish detours and help keep traffic delays to a minimum.

Another major project in the area will focus on Minnesota Highway 19 west of Marshall. Highway 19 will be resurfaced between U.S. Highway 75 in Lincoln County and Lyon County Road 5, Klisch said. In addition to the resurfacing, curves in the highway near its intersection with Lincoln County Road 8 will be re-sloped for better safety and visibility, Klisch said. In the city of Ivanhoe, pedestrian ramps will be installed in sidewalks along Highway 19 to make them compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Klisch said the construction on Highway 19 will mean lane closures but not a detour.

There will also be highway resurfacing work going on on U.S. Highway 59, from the intersection with U.S. Highway 14 north to Lyon County Road 6. Klisch said MnDOT will also be replacing about a mile of guard rail along the highway near Garvin Park.

Other projects in the region will include highway resurfacing on Minnesota Highway 68 between Canby and Porter, on Highway 67 between Redwood Falls and Morgan and on Highway 23 south of Pipestone. Klisch said Highway 75 will also be temporarily closed south of Trosky in Pipestone County while two box culverts are replaced.

Klisch said construction on Highway 19 is planned for May to August, and construction on Highway 59 is planned for August to September. However, more specific timelines for area construction projects and detours have not been finalized yet, Klisch and Olson said. However, Klisch said public information meetings are being planned for major projects. Additional information on pending road construction can also be found online.
