Medical growth spurs a new home for ACMC

March 2, 2013
By C. Paul Martin, M.D. , Marshall Independent

The past several years have brought significant medical developments for the people of Marshall and the surrounding area. In 2009, the Avera Health System of Sioux Falls purchased the Louis Weiner Memorial Hospital and campus from the city of Marshall and has subsequently modified the facility and added specialty physicians and staff to work in the hospital and the new attached Avera Physicians' Office Building.

That facility recently celebrated an open house event earlier this month.

Just prior to Avera's purchase, Dr. Anthony Nwakama built a new office and clinic, expanding his practice to include orthopedic clinical services, outpatient surgery, diagnostic services and physical therapy. Additional dental practices have been added on Lyon Street, Jewett Street and other areas.

What used to be known as the Doctors’ Plaza on East College Drive was established in 1960.

Perhaps the largest outpatient presence in Marshall at the present time is also one with a long history of community service. Dr. F.D. Gray built the Marshall Hospital in 1911 and operated a nursing school until the 1930s; Dr. B.C. Ford joined him after World War I. Drs. Cowin, Yaeger, and others operated the Anna Marie Hospital in the Geiseke house until 1950.

In the late 1940s, Drs. J.E. Eckdale, K.A. Peterson, J. Murphy, and P.C. Hedenstrom began a new generation of medical practice in Marshall. Dr. Eckdale practiced with Dr. Ford in the B.C. Ford Building (now Marshall Decorating), and Dr. Gray practiced with Dr. Peterson in the building next to the old library on 3rd Street (illustration).

Following the post-war years and the opening of the new Weiner Memorial Hospital in 1950, Drs. Eckdale and Peterson established Doctors' Plaza in 1960 on East Second Street (now East College Drive), at the site of the Hoffman and Brobst Accounting Firm (illustration). Drs. R.W. Taintor, Murphy, and Hedenstrom built the Marshall Medical Centre down the street.

Doctors' Plaza grew in adding Drs. L.E. Stover and J. Sutherland in the 1960s. In the 1970s, specialty physicians were hired to provide additional services, i.e., Drs. Kaczrowski, Odland, Herzog, Park, Martin, Laporte, Hanson and others.

The clinic grew in number of staff and size of facility when the new Weiner Memorial Medical Center and conjoined Doctors' Plaza opened in the spring of 1977. Additional staff was added in the 1980s, and medical associations were developed with secondary and tertiary hospitals and clinics in Sioux Falls, S.D., Willmar, the Twin Cities, and the Mayo Clinic for referrals.

As the computer age dictated changes in the delivery of medical care, Doctors' Plaza physician-owners joined the expanding Willmar Medical Center (now Affiliated Community Medical Centers), in 1987 to provide for improved medical care by additional physicians and staff and corporate interactions available with a larger system.

The intervening 25 years has seen ACMC-Marshall grow to a company of more than 25 physicians and midlevel staff supported by a general staff of nearly 100. About 20 or so physician consultants from other facilities treat patients at the clinic each month.

In about 1998, space for growth and parking facilities required the movement of primary care physicians (Family Medicine/Pediatrics) and staff to new clinic facilities at the Marshall Mall: specialty physicians of ACMC remained at the Bruce Street Clinic.

In 2012, ACMC decided to enhance their facilities to offer increased diagnostic and therapeutic services for the Marshall area by combining all their physician and associated staff into one building. That facility, located on Carlson Street west of K-Mart, will open this spring, thus completing another phase of growth and development which dates back nearly 53 years of medical care and service to Marshall.

Watch for the announcement of the opening and subsequent grand opening of the New ACMC-Marshall Clinic in the near future!
