February 25, 2013
Marshall Independent

A season-best 64 percent shooting performance in the first half could not be duplicated by the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team as the Mustangs saw a four-point halftime deficit turn into an 18-point defeat at the hands of Minnesota State-Mankato in Mankato on Saturday.

The Mustangs trailed the Mavericks 38-34 after the first 20 minutes, but fell in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season finale 80-62.

SMSU (4-24 overall, 2-20 NSIC) saw four players finish in double figures scoring against the Mavericks. Allison Nagel led the way with 13 points. Rebekah Rolling and Mikayla Saathoff each chipped in 11 points, though Saathoff added six assists and three steals. Ellen Degler added 10 points to the losing effort.

The Mavericks (22-4, 18-4) exploded offensively early in the second half, taking just eight minutes to turn their four-point lead into a 23-point edge following Ashley Olson's 3-pointer to make the score 64-41.

Minnesota State-Mankato connected on 10 of 24 3-pointers, including 6 of 14 3s after halftime, and had four players break into double-digits scoring.

Karlee Gengenbacher led all scorers with 18 points while teammates Aubrey Davis and Steffaney Thomas added 14 to the Maverick cause. Ali Wilkinson chipped in 10 points in the win.

The Mustangs are back in action on Wednesday to open up the 2013 NSIC women's basketball tournament with a road game against No. 1 seed St. Cloud State. The Huskies defeated SMSU 77-70 in Marshall on Jan. 11 in the only meeting between the teams this season.
