Area girls' basketball

MCC 55, MLA 45

The Murray County Central girls' basketball team got back in the win column on Thursday, defeating Mountain Lake Area 55-45 in Red Rock Conference action in Mountain Lake.

Jenna Ness led the Rebels (8-8 overall, 7-5 Red Rock) with 20 points and two steals. Jade Giese added 10 points in the win while Haley Bose pulled down 10 rebounds to go with six points.

MCC is back in action again on Tuesday when the Rebels play host to Westbrook-Walnut Grove in Slayton.

WWG 58, Southwest United 49

The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls' basketball team overcame a big scoring night from Southwest United sophomore Courtney Place to escape Okabena with a 58-49 win Thursday in Red Rock Conference action.

Place hit three 3-pointers and scored 32 of her team's points in the losing effort. She was 11-for-14 from the foul line.

WWG's Paige Erickson had a big game herself. She made 10 baskets and scored 25 points to go with five steals. Teammate Kelsi Wahl added 13 points and seven rebounds in the win.

The Chargers (8-10 overall, 6-6 RRC) continue conference action Tuesday when they take on Murray County Central in Slayton.

SESM?80, Wabasso 54

Sleepy Eye St. Mary's connected on 10 3-pointers en route to an 80-52 win over Wabasso in a Tomahawk Conference boys' basketball game played Thursday in Sleepy Eye.

The win was the Knights' seventh straight. They improve to 13-3 overall and 9-2 in the conference. SESM defeated Wabasso 69-67 Dec. 17 in Wabasso.

Kansas Adams knocked down four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Knights. Sean Mathiowetz also scored 22 for SESM.

Tanner Bock had a big game for Wabasso in the losing effort, scoring a team-high 18 points and grabbing 19 of the squad's 32 total rebounds. Rabbit guard Neil Eichten chipped in 13 points, five assists and four steals.

The Rabbits (8-10 overall, 5-5 Tomahawk) will look to get back on track Monday when they host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Conference contest.

Luverne 69, TMB 62

The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers were unable to complete the comeback on Thursday, falling to the Luverne Cardinals 69-62 in a non-conference boys' basketball game in Tracy. The Panthers (5-11 overall) trailed 38-24 at halftime, and received 13 second-half points from senior guard Parker Lanoue while trying to pick up a come-from-behind victory.

Lanoue was one of three Panthers to break double digits scoring against Luverne, and finished with 13 points. Alec Swan led TMB with a game-high 19 points, while freshman Josh Kirk chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Josh Slieter paced the Cardinals scoring effort, pouring in 17 points, while Matt Arends added 14. Brett Heronimus put up eight pounds and pulled down 11 boards in the win.

TMB will be back in action on Monday as the Panthers host the Windom Eagles.
