Area boys' basketball

WWG 66, CM/C 65 (2OT)

The Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys' basketball team beat Ellsworth for the first time in eight years on Saturday, and did so in style. Making clutch free throws when it counted most, the Chargers defeated Ellsworth 66-65 in double overtime on their home court in Westbrook.

The Chargers led 28-16 at halftime before Ellsworth stormed back in the second half and tied the game at 46 at the end of regulation. Each team scored six points in the first overtime before WWG outscored Ellsworth 14-13 in the second overtime. WWG forced the second overtime by getting a big bucket by Aaron Hass with just three seconds left off an assist from Alex Knutson.

After going 6-for-14 from the free throw line in the second half, the Chargers converted on 9 of their 10 attempts at the foul line in the two overtimes. They finished the game 16-for-26 from the line, while Ellsworth was just 5-for-16.

WWG's Taylor Lindaman led all scorers with 18 points. Knutson tallied 16 points and two blocks, and Hass had 10 points and eight boards.

Ellsworth (6-10 overall, 5-4 Red Rock Conference) was led by Johnathan Kramer, who hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points.

The Chargers (6-8, 3-5) continue conference play Tuesday against Southwest United in Okabena.

Cedar Mountain/Comfrey blew by Lakeview 85-46 in a non-conference boys' basketball game Saturday in Cottonwood for the Cougars' eighth straight victory.

Sam Pendleton poured in a game-high 20 points for the Cougars, who moved to 12-2 overall.

Derek Larsen scored 13 points and had four assists for the Lakers, and Jonah Dovre tallied seven points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Lakeview (8-11 overall) resumes Camden Conference play Tuesday against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in Tracy.

Area girls' basketball

RTR 69, Ortonville 53

In its final tune-up before it takes on the fourth-ranked team in Class A, Minneota, the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls' basketball squad squashed Ortonville 69-53 Saturday as part of a boy/girl doubleheader in Tyler.

Destinee Strand and Kaylie Nielsen each scored 13 points to lead the Knights (12-5 overall). Strand also had five rebounds and four steals. Dana Schaefer joined the group in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Ortonville (5-9) was led by Brenna Giese, who scored 16 points. Jenae Schneider hit four of the Trojans' seven 3-pointers and scored 12 points.

RTR will spend the next few days preparing for the Vikings. Their matchup is scheduled for Thursday in Tyler.

Area wrestling

Quad County finishes in 3rd place at WCC tournament

Thanks to 10 of its 13 individuals placing sixth or better, the Quad County wrestling team took third place at the West Central Conference tournament in Glenwood on Saturday. Quad County scored 124 points, but were bested by Atwater-Cosmos Grove City's conference best 235 points and BOLD's score of 158.5.

The Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle United finished sixth overall, with 104.5 points, despite not entering an individual competitor in five divisions.

Brandon Schmitt picked up his 100th career victory while capturing first place in the heavyweight division for the United. Schmitt faced just two other individuals in his championship run, pinning both after a combined 43 seconds.

Trevor Fagen wrestled his way to a championship at 120 pounds for Quad County. Fagen defeated ACGC's Derek Dengerud in a 7-6 decision to take the conference title.

Jordan Staab placed second at 195 pounds for the United, while Colton Specht (113) and Zach Kluver (126) each took second for Quad County.

ACGC had six individual champions in the day; while Benson, Sauk Centre/Melrose and MAHACA were the only teams without an individual champion.

Quad County (9-7 overall) is back on the mat Thursday for a road dual with Sauk Centre/Melrose. The United (9-7), meanwhile, are back in action Tuesday against fourth-ranked (Class A) Wabasso/Red Rock Central in Wabasso.
