MPD to continue interview process for officer positions

MARSHALL - The Marshall Police Department will be moving forward with the interview process to fill current vacancies. At a meeting of the Marshall police advisory board on Friday afternoon, board members approved a list of police officer candidates eligible to be interviewed for the open positions.

The police department is currently short two full-time officers and one part-time officer, said Marshall Public Safety Director Rob Yant.

At the meeting, Yant presented advisory board members with a roster of eligible officer candidates. Those candidates were the top choices out of a pool that originally had about 80 applicants, Yant said. More than 30 of those applicants completed testing, and the pool was further narrowed down. Marshall Police also conducted background checks on the 10 eligible candidates, he said.

Advisory board members voted to approve the eligibility roster, which will be valid for six months. Yant said the next step would be to interview candidates and make conditional job offers.

Although Yant said he planned to begin the interview process next week, it will still take some time before new officers are on duty. The new officers would need to undergo psychological testing and wait for the results. The Marshall City Council also needs to vote to authorize hiring new officers. Once hired, Yant said the new officers would begin a 14-week field training period, in which they would work closely with a current Marshall police officer.
