January 17, 2013
By Chris Hmielewski , Marshall Independent

Hello Mustang Fans!

The spring semester is underway at SMSU. It is great for SMSU and the City of Marshall to have our students back in town after the holiday break. With the spring semester comes a number of welcomed Mustang traditions including Hawaiian Night, Pink Zone, the Gold Rush Raffle and SMSU's Hall of Honor ceremony.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, we will host the 11th induction into the Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Hall of Honor. The festivities will begin at noon, in the SMSU Conference Center Ballroom, with a half-hour social, followed by lunch and the induction ceremonies beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tickets for the lunch and ceremony are $15 per person. To reserve a ticket for the banquet please call the SMSU athletics office at 507-537-7271.

This year's induction class includes former men's basketball player Frank Belmont; swimmer Mike Fallon; football player Jason Jacobs; football and baseball player Rich Rhinesmith; basketball player Andrea (Schreier) Sawatzky; former head baseball coach Jim Denevan; community members and supporters of SMSU athletics Brian and Kris Gruhot and Dan Snobl; and the 1991 volleyball team. The SMSU Athletics Hall of Honor was established in 1992 and inducts new members every two years.

Also on tap for Jan. 26 is the annual SMSU women's and men's basketball "Alumni Day." SMSU will host Winona State later that night as part of "Hawaiian Night" in the R/A Facility.

The SMSU women's basketball alumni game will start at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the SMSU men's basketball alumni game at 11 a.m. with both games being played in the PE Gym.

Fact Box

Mustang Trivia Question

When was the last time the SMSU Wrestling team compiled 10 duals wins in a season?

The first person to email me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive an SMSU t-shirt.

Following the games, all alumni are invited to attend a brunch starting at noon, provided by SMSU boosters Kevin and Karla Anundson. SMSU basketball alumni will receive two free tickets to the Mustang basketball doubleheader on Saturday night versus Winona State starting at 5 p.m.

The evening will close with a post-game social starting at 9 p.m. The location for the post-game social will be announced at a later time.

All basketball alums are encouraged to R.S.V.P by Jan. 21 to receive your free tickets. Please contact SMSU assistant women's basketball coach Clare Duwelius at clare.duwelius@smsu.edu or SMSU head men's basketball coach Brad Bigler at brad.bigler@smsu.edu, or call 507-537-7986.

Gold Rush Raffle Tickets are now available! You can contact Mike Ellingson, Brian Gruhot, Ken Mukomela and Karen VanKeulen who all have tickets. The 10th Annual Gold Rush Raffle will be held on Friday, Feb. 22, at the SMSU Conference Center. We have some great live and silent auction items planned for this year's event. The Gold Rush Raffle Committee has set a goal of raising $50,000 this year with all the proceeds going to SMSU athletic scholarships. Please mark your calendars now for this great mid-winter social event.

This Week in Mustang Athletics:

The SMSU wrestling team suffered its first dual loss of the season at the Tracy Borah duals in Gunnison, Colo. last weekend, but rebounded in true Mustang fashion winning the final three matches of the day. SMSU is now 10-1 on the season in dual matches equaling the number of victories the Mustang had last year.

SMSU's only loss of the season came last weekend against No. 14 Colorado Mesa, 32-9. The Mustangs proceeded to capture a 28-15 victory over California Baptist and a 25-18 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo before defeating Western State Colorado 19-17 in the finale last Saturday. SMSU will begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition Friday, playing host to Augustana College in the PE Gym at 7 p.m.

The SMSU men's basketball team (8-9 overall, 5-5 NSIC) suffered a heart breaking loss to the University of Sioux Falls, Tuesday, as SMSU traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D. for a mid-week game versus the Cougars. The Mustangs will look to recover this weekend traveling to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on Northern State (14-3, 8-2) at 8 p.m. Friday night. On Saturday, SMSU will battle Minnesota State-Moorhead (13-3, 7-3) with the contest beginning at 6 p.m. Both NSU and MSUM sit right above the Mustangs in the NSIC standings. Two Mustang victories this weekend will move SMSU into the mix at the top of the NSIC.

The SMSU women's basketball team (2-13, 1-9) is coming off a 66-52 victory over the University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday night. The Mustangs continue playing on the road this weekend heading to Northern State (10-4, 6-4) on Friday with the tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. SMSU will turn around on Saturday and battle the MSUM Dragons (7-7, 4-6) at 4 p.m. in Moorhead.

The SMSU wheelchair basketball team will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday at home as they take on the Rollin' Timberwolves with two games (6 p.m. and 8 p.m.) on Saturday and one on Sunday (10 a.m.).

The NCAA Champion Magazine did a feature article in their most recent edition on wheelchair basketball called "Boundless Determination". The SMSU wheelchair basketball program was highlighted along with the University of Illinois's team providing the history of the sport and what the future holds for wheelchair basketball in the United States.

I would like to wish all of our Mustang teams the best of luck this weekend!

Go Mustangs!

Congratulations to Steve Hawkinson, who provided the correct answer to the last week's Mustang Hoofprints Question: What SMSU Women's Basketball Player holds the top spot for career 3-Point field goals made at SMSU? Michelle Bruns put in 190 three point field goals in her career as a Mustang earning her the top spot in the record books.
