Louise Schmid

Louise was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Detroit, Mich., to Charles and Mattie Hardan. She had but one sibling, a sister Regina, with whom she was very close. She moved with her family from Detroit to Tennessee where they lived for several years before returning to Detroit where she graduated high school then completed two years of college at K- College in Kalamazoo, Mich. She and her sister then moved to Minneapolis where she met John A. Froelich of Tracy. They were married for 25 years, living in both Minnesota and Michigan. After John's death she married Lester Schmid of Marshall, while attending Southwest State University where she was completing her bachelor's degree in independent studies. During their 22 years of marriage Les and Louise lived in Marshall, but traveled extensively throughout the world, living three months in England and three months in Chile, visited most of the European countries, Canada and nearly every state in America. Besides traveling, Louise loved cooking, canning and freezing bounty from the garden, classical music, the theater, bird identification and political discussions. Her proudest achievements were her work with Habitat for Humanity, being instrumental in the development of the local food shelf, and being presented with the award for local volunteer of the year.

Survivors include her children Mark Froelich of San Diego, Calif.; Lynn Wigton (and Clarence) of Lake Shetek; Kurt Froelich (and DeeAnn) of Golden Valley; Ben Schmid of Marshall and Heidi Schmid of Marshall; grandchildren Danielle Baker, Johnathan Wigton, Bradley Wigton, Angela Morrow, Michael Froelich, JoAnn Boettcher and Sheree Froelich; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her spouses John Froelich and Lester Schmid, an infant son (Froelich) and her sister Regina.

Louise's family thank the staff of the Prairie Home Hospice House for their patience, love and care for the past two+ years during her journey home, as well as our local Avera chemo nurses. If only you could realize what a difference you make in allowing local treatment rather than a weekly trip to Sioux Falls! God Bless you all.

Blessed be the memory of Louis Schmid.
