Sharbono goes for 21 as Marshall boys crush Windom

January 4, 2013
Marshall Independent

Their shooting wasn't very good, nor was their defensive rebounding, but the Marshall Tigers still had no problem with Windom Area Thursday night in a 61-36 runaway win in Southwest Conference boys' basketball action in Windom.

Marshall guard Riley Sharbono scored 21 points and had seven rebounds to lead the seventh-ranked Tigers, who have won eight straight games since dropping their season opener.

It was a fast start for the Tigers, who built a 41-19 lead on the Eagles (4-5 overall, 1-4 SWC) by halftime.

"We got up on them right away," Marshall head coach Travis Carroll said. "Defensively, we played well right away other than giving up a lot of offensive rebounds."

The Tigers won the battle of the boards 48-38, but Carroll wasn't satisfied with the 22 offensive rebounds that his team allowed the Eagles to grab.

There were plenty of opportunities for Windom Area to get offensive boards, as the Eagles shot just 20.7 percent (11 of 53) from the field for the game. Marshall didn't shoot very well either, but made almost twice as many shots (20 of 61) while shooting 32.7 percent from the field. They also went 17 of 23 from the foul line.

Sharbono was the only Tiger to score in double figures. He got his points by being aggressive with the basketball.

"He did a good job of getting to the basket," Carroll said. "He shot well from the free-throw line (6 of 8), but overall, when he had the ball in his hands he did a good job of attacking the rim."

Tanner Bukowski and Connor Winkelman each had nine points. Bukowski added six rebounds and four assists.

Windom Area was led by Collin Lovell, who scored 11 points and had eight rebounds. He was the only Eagle to score more than six points.

The Tigers have a tougher challenge ahead when they take on Sioux Falls Lincoln (S.D.) today at Marshall High School. The Patriots are ranked fourth in South Dakota's largest class (AA). The two teams are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m
