Lyon County recycling education coordinator
How many of you remember when curbside recycling started here in Lyon County? I know, it's not fair picking brains at such a hectic time of the year is it? So to make it easier I'll make it a multiple choice and give you a hint besides. A. June of 1980 B. SEPTEMBER OF 1990 C. August of 2000. Unbelievable isn't it? Just thinka lot of Lyon County residents have been conserving resources, energy and landfill space and reducing air and water pollution for 22 years! Kudos to all of you! As we know changes have occurred during those years, e.g. additions to the acceptable list; single-sort instead of sorting by category; push carts instead of bin totes; etc.
Along with those types of things, there has occasionally been a change in recycling collection service providers. And starting Jan. 1, 2013, that will be the case.
With that said, let me share some changes/reminders with you. Ohand if you would pass them on to family and friends that may not read the paper it would be very much appreciated! There will be some notice "on the air" too, but without helpful folks like you to spread the word the outreach would not be nearly as widespread as it is. Thanks a lot!
Here we go. *Curbside collection throughout Lyon County will occur every week instead of every other week. Following is the schedule: *Monday - Marshall (same day as normal trash pickup). *Tuesday - Marshall (same day as trash pickup), Balaton, Florence. *Wednesday - Tracy, Garvin, Lake Marshall, Amiret, Ghent, Minneota, Taunton. *Thursday - Marshall (same day as normal trash pickup), Green Valley, Cottonwood, Lynd, Russell.
*Set your cart at the curb the night before collection day. *To help keep the process running smoother please keep 3 feet between recycling cart, garbage cart, mailbox, etc., so the truck's mechanical "hands" can efficiently grab the cart. *Don't place recyclables in plastic bags before you place them in your cart. *Don't include plastic bag/wrap in recycling. *No Styrofoam *Plastic bottles/tubs/containers with Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7 inside the recycling symbol are acceptable. No 4 or 6 please. *Pop/beer cartons can be included in recycling.
*This column of course doesn't/can't include specifics, but you can call us at 532-8210 with questions or for more details. You can also visit us online at www.lyonco.org. However, if you notice at first that it doesn't say that collection will be every week instead of the "gold week" or "green week" thing or that the list of acceptable/not acceptable isn't updated that means I still have to have one of the computer guys help me with it.
As always thanks to everybody for doing a good job with recycling and for being so helpful in spreading the word! The service providers appreciate it and so do I!
The Hazardous Waste Facility accepts computers/monitors, TVs, printers, fax machines, VCRs and DVD players. Call our office for fees charged/details.
