Tiger boys crush Huskies, 80-50

December 19, 2012
Marshall Independent

Behind a lopsided rebounding effort on Tuesday night in Jackson, the Marshall boys' basketball team managed to run the Jackson County Central Huskies of their own court in an 80-50 Southwest Conference victory.

Aaron Mathiowetz had 11 rebounds and Derek Buysse had 10 to lead the Tigers to 52 total rebounds compared to JCC's 27. As a result, the Tigers outscored the Huskies 14-3 on second-chance points during the game.

"We rebounded the ball well tonight," Marshall head coach Travis Carroll said. "Going into the game that was a concern, but our guys did a very good job on the boards tonight. They did a very good job of boxing out."

The Tigers were nearly automatic from 3-point range during the game as well, converting 60 percent of their 3-pointers for 27 of their 80 points. Thanks to 18 assists and five players scoring in double figures, the Tigers (3-1 overall, 3-0 Southwest Conference) were able to keep JCC off balance and pick up their third consecutive win.

"We had a very balanced scoring attack from our team," Carroll said. "That was good to see. It was a lot like our last game, where we were able to get scoring from a lot of different guys."

Buysse led the Tigers in scoring, putting up 17 points to his 10 rebounds to complete his double-double. He also had a team-high five assists.

Hunter Peterson, who battled foul trouble in Marshall's first two contests, seems to be finding his stride at the moment, as he had 16 points for the Tigers.

"Hunter did a real good job of getting us going tonight offensively," Carroll said. "He started the game off with a few shots that kind of kick started us going forward."

The Tigers led 46-28 at halftime, and managed to stretch their 18-point lead to 30 points over the final 18 minutes of the game despite the Huskies' attempts at slowing Marshall down.

"(We) did a real good job of sharing the basketball tonight," Carroll said. "Jackson tried to slow us down with the zone, but our guys did a job of attacking the rim and getting to the basket and getting good looks."

Also reaching double figures scoring for the Tigers was Riley Sharbono (11), Carl Douglas (11) and Austin Saugstad (10).

The Tigers will take a break from Southwest Conference play for their next contest, as they host section opponent Mankato West at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
