Justin Varpness and Brent Breczinski each went 2-0, while three other wrestlers representing the Marshall/Lakeview Tigers went 1-0, on the first day of the Redwood Valley wrestling tournament in Redwood Falls on Friday.
Breczinski, who picked up wins in two close decisions (7-4 and 7-5) at 126 pounds, particularly impressed head coach Justin Bouwman with his form.
"He wrestled two really good matches against two pretty decent kids, two close matches," Bouwman said. "He's wrestling really well. He just kind of turned it on and he's doing all the things he needs to do to be really successful."
Riley Roth, at 132 pounds, and Austin Nath, a heavyweight, went 1-0 on Friday, as did Jared Holland at 195 pounds.
"He's wrestling pretty well right now," Bouwman said of Holland. "When he gets in a groove he can do a lot of great things, and I think he's starting to hit that groove so we're just going to keep riding it out."
Despite still being shorthanded due to injuries, Bouwman said that those capable of competing are doing so at an elevated level.
"We probably won't get a few guys back until after Christmas so we're still kind of fighting that injury bug. But the rest of the guys are wrestling well, so when we do get those guys back I think we're going to be sitting pretty good."
Four other Tigers competed on Friday, each of them going 1-1.
The Tiger wrestlers continue their tournament today starting at 9 a.m.
