It was an action-packed Saturday for the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team, which competed against Jamestown College in a dual in Forest City, Iowa and also had individual wrestlers taking part in the Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake, Iowa.
SMSU won nine of 10 matches against Jamestown to claim a dominant 42-3 victory. Michael Larson (197 pounds) and Jake Begin (165) both earned pins for the Mustangs, while Travis Peralta (184) and Terrence Meier (174) claimed technical falls. SMSU also had two major decisions, one by Justin Reinsma at 133 pounds and the other by Codie Lane at 149 pounds.
Kyle Begin competed at the Buena Vista open and continued his strong freshman season following a week in which he was awarded the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week award. He went 4-0 Saturday, earning two pins on his way to taking the 165-pound championship.
Also at the BV Open, freshman Cody Reed went 3-2 in the 141-pound bracket, earning two pins and a major decision. Caleb Smothers (133) went 2-2, as did Travis Longtin (165). Jake Slocum (157) and Ed Reno both went 0-2 for the Mustangs.
SMSU has a long layoff until its next competition. The Mustangs will be back in action Jan. 12 when they travel to Gunnison, Colo., for four duals hosted by Western State.
