Already with a hat trick in hand, Windom Area's Travis Janssen put the finishing touches on a memorable night by scoring 14 seconds into overtime to lift his Eagles to a 5-4 win over the Marshall boys' hockey team Thursday night in Windom.
The Eagles overcame a large disparity in shots on goal, as Marshall finished the game with 47 shots on goal to Windom's 24. The most lopsided period was the second period, when Marshall (1-1 overall) outshot the Eagles (1-0) 27-7, but Windom outscored Marshall 2-1 in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the third.
Janssen put the Eagles up 4-2 on an unassisted goal 2 minutes, 18 seconds into the third period. Seeing their chances at a win slip away, the Tigers put forth a frantic comeback.
The Tigers added two goals in a span of two minutes midway through the third period. Both were on power plays. The first was from Quinn Horvath on an assist from Brent Haukom and Corey Clark. The second was by Tyler Untiedt on an assist from Andrew Bell and Levi Hedman.
A tripping penalty by Marshall's Austin Leek in the final minute of regulation led to a power play for the Eagles, which they used to their advantage in the overtime period as Janssen scored his game-winner.
Thursday marked the first time Windom has defeated Southwest Conference foe Marshall since Dec. 8, 2005 when the Eagles won 2-1 in Windom.
Marshall goalkeeper Mason Campion had 19 saves for the Tigers on Thursday, while Windom's Ben Stubbe had 43 saves.
The Tigers will try to bounce back Saturday when they hit the road to play Hutchinson.
