Lizzie Archbold recorded a hat trick to lead the Marshall girls' hockey team to an 8-0 win over Worthington in the Tigers' Southwest Conference opener Tuesday in Worthington.
The Tigers (2-1 overall) kept the heat on the Trojans (0-2) all game long, putting 55 shots on goal to Worthington's 11.
"Our main focus was coming out strong. We knew this was the first conference game of the year and we wanted to come out with a lot of energy," Marshall head coach Kevin Schroeder said. "We talked about being aggressive and establishing a strong forecheck, and I thought we did that right from the start."
Marshall scored two goals in the first period. The first came on shot by Morgan Larsen just under six minutes into the game. Jessica Blanchard and Hanna Peterson were credited with assists. Then less than two minutes later, Peterson scored a goal of her own to give the Tigers the early edge.
The big scoring outburst for Marshall came in the second period, where the Tigers lit the lamp five times. Archbold had two goals in the period, while Peterson, Megan Vogl and Sara Antony scored the others. Archbold's third goal of the game was the only goal of the third period.
Schroeder said his team did a good job carrying out the gameplan from the first drop of the puck to the final horn.
"I thought we got a lot of good aggressive play out of pretty much everyone," Schroeder said. "We skated three lines for the first time this year, and I thought that worked out pretty well. We got some of the younger girls some good playing time, too."
Junior goaltender Sierra Wagner got the start in net for Marshall and went all three periods. She finished with 11 saves.
The Tigers continue conference play Thursday when they travel to face Windom Area.
