It was a successful Saturday in the pool for the Marshall swim team at the Section 3A Championships in Hutchinson, as the Tigers had two relay teams and three individuals qualify for the Class A state meet.

Kylie Vermeire and McKenzie Vermeire both had big days for the Tigers, advancing to state in two individual events and as part of the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

The Vermeires combined with Ashley Dunn and Abby Surprenant in the relays, finishing third in each of the events. They swam a time of 3:41.20 to qualify in the 400 relay, and Marshall head coach Nicole Peterson said the team was especially pleased with its time of 1:41.76 to make state in the 200 relay.

"The 200 relay hadn't had a qualifying time all season," Peterson said. "They cut about two-and-a-half seconds off their best time, so that was an exciting race. They were very determined to make state and they swam like it."

Kylie Vermeire also made state in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. She placed second in both events Saturday, swimming a 2:11.51 in the 200 and a 5:17.83 in the 500. She was a second behind Holy Family's Mackenzie Braden in the 200 and a little over three seconds off Braden's pace in the 500, but easily swam under the state cut in each event.

McKenzie Vermeire also had a pair of second-place individual finishes to punch her ticket to state in the events. She swam a 2:11.51 in the 200 individual medley, a time that was nearly five seconds below the state cut. She also swam a 59.55 in the 100 backstroke, which was more than three seconds under the state cut.

* Denotes state qualifier

Dunn, a sophomore, will join McKenzie Vermeire at state in the 100 backstroke after swimming a time of 1:02.08, which was a second below the state cut. She finished fifth in Saturday's final.

"That was a lot of fun to see," Peterson said of Dunn qualifying in the 100 backstroke. "She's a hard-working young lady and had made the state cut on Thursday, but knew she'd have to hold that again on Saturday, and she did. She even cut some more time off on Saturday."

Dunn also narrowly missed making state in the 100 butterfly. She finished fifth in the event with a time of 1:02.58, while the state cut was 1:02.14.

The Tigers will train for their state events over the next few days before heading to Minneapolis on Thursday. The state preliminaries take place on Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, with the finals being held on Saturday.
