The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team took the mat for its first competition of the season on Saturday in the 42nd annual Bison Open at the Bison Sports Arena on the campus of North Dakota State.
The Mustangs had three wrestlers place, led by Micah Larson and Justin Reinsma. Both wrestlers finished third in their respective weight class.
Reinsma won his first two matches at 133 pounds before falling to NDSU's Justin Schekenback in a 3-0 decision in the semifinals. He rebounded with a 6-1 win over Tyler Tischer, of Minnesota State-Moorhead, in the consolation semifinals, then won third place with a 6-4 win over the University of Minnesota's Randy Hanson.
Larson earned third place with a pin over Concordia's Delson Saintal at 197 pounds. He won two decisions earlier in the day, with his only loss coming to Joel Bauman of Minnesota in an 8-3 decision.
Travis Peralta took fourth for SMSU at 184 pounds. He earned a pin over Minnesota State-Moorhead's Matthew Beehler in the first round and picked up two more victories. He then fell in a decision to NDSU's Kody Sorenson in the third-place match.
The Mustangs are back in action Saturday at the Concordia Cobber Open.
