CANBY - The Canby polling place on the Minnesota West Community and Technical College campus closed on Election Day between about 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. because of a bomb threat.

An unknown suspect wrote "bomb in school" on the inside of a female bathroom stall door, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office said. It is unknown when the threat was written.

Two female students found the writing and reported it to school officials.

Law enforcement and other emergency response personnel responded to a bomb threat at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Canby on Tuesday.

"We did have a written bomb threat in the main building of Minnesota West Canby, indicating there was a bomb in school," said Rebecca Weber, campus dean. "We followed our policy and evacuated all students, staff, and faculty and called local police and fire."

Weber said the area where the bomb threat was found was in a separate building from where the voting machines were, but all buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

The scene was declared safe at 1 p.m., the YMC Sheriff's Office said, and all activity, including voting at the polling station, was allowed to resume at that time.

"We continue working with law enforcement and investigators in this matter," Weber said.
