Here's a thought for Oct. 26

Your marriage has a unique function that you may not have thought about lately.

Marriage is created by God and defined by God in the Scriptures as the sexual and the covenantal union of a man and a woman.

Genesis 1:2728: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.' Genesis 2:2324 "When the woman is created from his side, the man exclaims: 'This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.' 24 Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."

When Jesus was asked about those married who were divorcing, he took us back to God's design for marriage. In Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus referring back to God's creative design for marriage says, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female 5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?' 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together let not man separate."

But the meaning of marriage in the Bible clearly goes beyond the personal communion of husband and wife and the visible product of their one flesh relationship seen in their children. This union of husband and wife in a covenant relationship with each other was meant by God to be a significant portrayal of Christ's relationship with the church.

We see this in Ephesians 5:31-32. "Therefore (quoting Genesis 2:24) a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church." God made marriage to be one man and one woman so they could display Christ's relationship with the church. The husband displays the role of Christ and the wife displays the church, the bride of Christ.

It is a humbling thing for every marriage to see that God brought you together as husband and wife to mirror Christ's relationship with the church. When men love their wives sacrificially and women show respect for their husbands, they model Christ's unconditional love for his bride, the church and the church's honor for Christ.

This might be a good time for you to seriously think about marriage as God created and designed it.

It might be a better time for us to look at our own marriages, as husband and wife, and ask if our marriages are mirroring Christ's relationship with the church. The sacredness of God's design in marriage is for a man and woman to display this relationship.
