BELVIEW - Services for Johnnie Helmer Kvendru, 101, of Belview will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Dell Lutheran Church in rural Belview. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Sunset Funeral Home in Echo, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and visitation continuing one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. He died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at the Parkview Manor in Belview.
He was born June 2, 1911, to Halvor and Anna (Abrahamson) Kvendru on the family farm in Swedes Forest Township, Redwood County. He enlisted into the United States Navy in Houston, Texas. He was a Third Class Gunners Mate on the Merchant Marine ships in the Persian Gulf during WWII. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on Nov. 9, 1945.
Survivors include his three siblings, Adelaide Walseth of Echo, Glenn of El Cajhon, Calif., and Arfield of Belview; step-son, Robert Goetz of Austin; two step grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
