Struggling Bemidji State was unable to provide much of a challenge to the second-ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team on Friday night, as the Mustangs raced past the Beavers 25-12, 25-11, 25-16 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match in Bemidji.
Brooke Burmeister had 11 kills and three of SMSU's nine ace serves to lead the Mustangs, who improve to 17-1 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC following their 10th straight victory.
"I thought we got better defensively as the match went on, and I thought we served effectively," SMSU head coach Terry Culhane said. They had a hard time handling our serve and that always makes it easier to defend when the other team isn't in system as much."
The Mustangs have now won 18 straight matches over BSU dating back to 2003.
SMSU finished the match with a .302 hitting percentage, while the Bemidji State attack sputtered to a .062 attack percentage. No Beavers player had more than five kills or five digs on the night.
Senior Devin Diedrich reached a Mustang milestone in the first set, recording her 1,500th career kill. She sits in third place on SMSU's career kills list and finished with nine kills on the night.
Mary Groth and McKell Anderson each had six kills for the Mustangs, while Emilee Gutzmer had 26 set assists. Junior Rachel Westby led the SMSU defense with 15 digs.
The Mustangs are back in action tonight in Crookston for a match against Minnesota-Crookston. The Golden Eagles defeated Sioux Falls 3-1 Friday night in Crookston to improve to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
