The Marshall volleyball team opened up its run at the Lakeville North tournament with a pair of impressive wins Friday night.

Facing a Tri-City United team that had lost just two matches entering the tournament, the Tigers took down the Titans 25-10, 25-16.

In Marshall's second match of the night, the team got a look at a familiar foe, taking on Sioux Falls Roosevelt (S.D.) for the second time this season. The Tigers, who beat the Rough Riders 3-1 on Sept. 11, were up to the task again on Friday and earned a 25-15, 25-22 victory over Roosevelt.

Marshall head coach Dan Westby said the Tigers got off to a strong start against Tri-City United thanks to their serving.

"Tri-City has had a good year and we just did a nice job fo limiting the number of swings they were able to get," Westby said. "We really served tough and had them on their heels."

Maci Louwagie was 12 of 12 serving and also had a team-high four ace blocks for Marshall. Sydney Griffin led the Tigers' attack with 11 kills to go with eight set assists. And Hannah Bennett led the team defensively with 11 digs.

Marshall knew what to expect in its second match of the season against Roosevelt and jumped on the Rough Riders early on.

"They're a really big team and very athletic. They're probably the biggest team we've faced this year," Westby said. "Their size was a concern for us, but we really served well, especially in the first set, and got out to a big lead early on."

The Tigers also took a nice lead in the second set, which they began on a 7-1 run. Roosevelt eventually came back to take the lead with the help of some struggles by Marshall passing the ball. The Tigers came back to tie the match at 22-all, and then Angela Tauer went on a serving run to help close out the set.

Tauer finished 10 of 11 serving with two aces. Kenzie Beekman led Marshall in both kills (11) and digs (eight).

Marshall returns to action today at 11:15 a.m. against either Prior Lake or Caledonia.
