Vote Yes for Growth on Nov. 6

October 4, 2012
Marshall Independent

To the editor:

On Nov. 6 the Marshall residents will hit the polling places in Marshall with many decisions to make on who to lead and what to vote for. It is a great opportunity to have an impact on the economy and the future of this country and this community. It is a chance for Marshall residents to "Vote YES for Growth" locally. There will be a ballot to vote for funding for two economic development growth projects. These projects are about facilities and having funds to expand the operations of the MERIT Center and develop the Southwest MN Regional Amateur Sports Complex. While the dollars will be used for brick and mortar, and having great facilities is key to bringing groups to Marshall, the economic impact will be much greater.

This vote is an investment in the future of Marshall's economy. Families who will come to use the sports facilities will search out what Marshall has to offer. There will be time between games or matches that they will need to fill and want to stray away from the sports venues. They will stay in our hotels, they will eat in our restaurants, and buy goods in our stores. They will stop at our gas stations to fuel up before heading home. They will go to the movies, play mini-golf, rent videos, swim at the aquatic center, play golf at the golf club and much more. There are all kinds of statistics that will show how many tournaments Marshall hosts now, and how many they can host in the future but the numbers to focus in on are 190 construction jobs, the 8 full-time jobs and indirectly the 50 jobs that will be created via hotels, retail and restaurants. This is a vote that will boost and sustain our jobs, and continue to bring new business investments into the Marshall community. The MERIT Center is a state-of-the-art training facility that does and will bring in professional people to train and spend dollars here in Marshall.

We are a community of people who believe in doing things the good ol' fashioned way of hard work and coming together for the good of our families. Your vote "Yes for Growth" on Nov. 6 will show the state of Minnesota that Marshall is a city that knows how to come together to create a city that its residents are proud to call home and that we can work to make things happen. I hope you join me in my support and vote "Yes for Growth" on Nov. 6.
