Tiger tennis falls to Hutch in first round of sections

The Marshall girls' tennis team got wins from its top two singles players in Tuesday's first-round Section 2AA match against Hutchinson, but things didn't go so well for Marshall after that.

Third-seeded Hutchinson won each of the remaining five matches in straight sets to move on to face Shakopee today in the second round.

Marshall senior Brooke Lowagie battled for a first-set win over Sarah Jensen in the No. 1 singles match, then shut down Jensen in the second set of a 7-5, 6-0 victory. At No. 2 singles, Marshall junior Julia Hartmann also dispatched her opponent (Rochelle Brooks) in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-4.

The regular third singles player for Marshall, Jenna Gannott, was unable to compete for Marshall due to renewed concussion-like symptoms from an injury last winter. She also missed Monday's dual against Willmar, which was a 5-2 Cardinals win.

"It's too bad we had to lose Jenna at the end, but that's the way it goes," Marshall head coach Holly Knudson said. "We competed with Willmar yesterday and Hutch beat Willmar 4-3, so I thought we still had a chance today even without Jenna. We just played a little flat today."

Anja Baumgarn moved up from the No. 4 to No. 3 singles spot for Marshall, and Tori St. Aubin came up from the junior varsity squad to play No. 4 singles. The two struggled Tuesday and were both swept 6-0, 6-0.

Marshall's top doubles team of Maggie Roy and Maddie Schoephoerster also lost their first set to Allison Neubarth and Nicole Roepke 6-0, but found life in the second set before falling 6-4.

The other two doubles teams for Marshall were unable to win more than two games in any of their sets.

It was a disappointing end of the season for a Marshall squad (7-10 overall) that had shown much improvement during the year. But Knudson said the players have a lot to be proud of.

"It was a good season, much better than last year," Knudson said. "We tied for the conference championship, so it was definitely a good season.

"Hopefully this will spark a little fire with the girls who are returning and they'll be inspired to work hard on their fitness and conditioning in the offseason."

Some of the Marshall players still aren't done with the season, as two singles players and two doubles teams will be selected to compete at the individual section tournament on Oct. 13 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
