Ryan Ross vocal recital Oct. 8 at SMSU
Ryan Ross, a baritone and 2008 Southwest Minnesota State University alumnus, will present a free vocal recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, at the SMSU Campus Religious Center.
Ross will be accompanied by Music Professor Daniel Rieppel, a longtime mentor and friend. Rieppel will perform two selections for solo piano by Franz Liszt and parts of his upcoming series of recitals in Minneapolis and at the University of Iowa.
After graduating from SMSU with degrees in vocal music education and vocal performance, Ross accepted a full scholarship to pursue a master's of music in opera performance at the Cole Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach. While there, he won the conservatory's Vocal Concerto Competition. Ross also launched a five-part concert/lecture series titled "Rediscovered Beauty: Suppressed Composers," dedicated to the generation of musicians, artists and composers who were suppressed and silenced by the Third Reich.
For the past year, Ross has studied under the tutelage of the operatic tenor, Maestro Dennis O'Neill, at his opera school, the Wales International Academy of Voice. He is one of only 20 students given a spot at the academy and has the distinction of being the first American in the program.
There will be a free-will donation at the concert, with proceeds going toward Ross to help finance a second year at the Wales International Academy of Voice.
